
MBChB FCS(SA) FRCS
He was at school and university in Cape
Town obtaining his MB ChB at UCT in 1967. After internship at
Groote Schuur Hospital and Senior House Officer at Harare
Hospital in Zimbabwe, he spent one and a half years overseas,
obtaining his Primary of the FRCS in Edinburgh and doing
casualty and GP locums in the UK. On his return to South Africa
he was a surgical registrar at King Edward Hospital in Durban
from 1971 to 1973. He then returned to GSH, obtaining his FCS
(SA) in 1974 and FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1975. In 1976 he spent the
year at Hereford County Hospital in the UK, before joining Drs
Jeffery and Partners in private practice in 1977.
Since then he has been a part time consultant at Groote Schuur
Hospital in the Department of Surgery and the Gastrointestinal
Clinic where he does a regular ERCP session. He was registered
as a Surgical Gastroenterologist in 1993. He served in the
thyroid and oesophageal clinics.
He was involved in the development of laparoscopic surgery by
general surgeons in South Africa and was an executive member of
the founding committee of the South African Society of
Endoscopic Surgeons. His area of special interest is
hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery including ERCP and
laparoscopic surgery.
He has been author and co-author of several peer review journals
and has presented oral papers and posters at the South African
Surgical and Gastroenterology congresses and the World Congress
of Gastroenterology. He is the founder and director of the
Kingsbury Hospital Friday Meeting for Continuing Medical
Education.
He practises from our Kingsbury, Constantiaberg and Vincent
Pallotti rooms.
He is married to Catherine and they have two children Robyn and
James and lives in Rondebosch, Cape Town. His other interests
are hockey, running, cricket and is an active member of the
Simonstown Historical Society.
