Philip Matley, Age 49 completed his medical studies at the University of Cape Town after which he worked
in Pietermaritzburg for a few years before returning to specialise in general surgery. He completed his
training in 1987 winning the medal for the best candidate in general surgery in the country.
He pursued further studies in vascular surgery and registered as a specialist vascular surgeon in 1991.
In that year he was awarded the Phyllis Knocker/Bradlow medal, the College of Medicine of South Africa's
most prestigious award. |
He has continued to devote most of his attention to vascular surgery with
particular interest in varicose vein problems, abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid problems or stroke,
and restoring the circulation to the legs both by bypass and by minimally invasive procedures under
local anaesthetic. These include balloon angioplasty and the introduction of stents into blocked arteries.
He has published a number of articles in major scientific journals and is a regular speaker at medical congresses. He is an executive committee member of the Vascular Society of Southern Africa and serves on the education and standards committee of the International Society of Vascular Surgeons.
He is married and has two children (23 and 20) and is a keen photographer, water-sport enthusiast and family man.
