Dr James Tunnicliffe was the Senior Specialist Vascular Surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital after returning from the United Kingdom in April 1996. James grew up in England, but completed his schooling in Natal. He graduated from UCT with a distinction in Surgery at the Final Exam and was the recipient of the Stabler Prize in Surgery in 1985. He received his Post Graduate Surgical training at Groote Schuur Hospital and obtained his FCS(SA) in October 1992. He then took up a Specialist appointment at Groote Schuur in Vascular Surgery and worked exclusively in Vascular Surgery for the next two years. In 1995, he was appointed Senior Registrar in Bournemouth, to further his vascular training working with Simon Darke, one of the Senior Vascular Surgeons in the UK. During that time he was trained in, and performed endovascular procedures and furthered his experience in General and Vascular Surgery.
He returned to Groote Schuur Hospital in May 1996 to fill the post of Senior Specialist. James has performed original research on various topics in Vascular Surgery and presented the data at Vascular Society meetings in South Africa-twice winning prizes for the presentations. He has also presented at international scientific meetings. He has authored or co-authored 4 articles published in peer reviewed journals and 9 abstracts. He has subsequently pursued an active private practice and has a special interest in endovascular techniques in the management of arterial and venous disorders. He remains actively involved in teaching.
