Anna grew up in Pretoria where she attended Pretoria High School for Girls and matriculated in 2001. Her undergraduate degree was obtained at the University of Pretoria in 2007. Thereafter Anna move to Cape Town where she completed her two year internship training at Groote Schuur Hospital. Her interest in surgery was sparked and in 2010 Anna moved to Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit where she gained further surgical knowledge working as a Medical Officer in the Department of Surgery for almost 3 years. Despite her love for the lowveld, her surgical interests led her to seek broader experience and she moved to London where she worked in the Acute Care Surgery Unit at Kings College Hospital.
Anna commenced her formal General Surgical training at Groote Schuur Hospital in 2014, in 2018 she completed the Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa exam, as well as the Master of Medicine Degree in Surgery from the University of Cape Town. In her final year of training Anna was awarded the Swann-Morton Prize for best registrar. Throughout her training period and alongside her MMed Anna developed an interest in colorectal surgery and has been involved in endoscopic outreach to the west coast and Northern Cape. She has participated in local and international research and contributed to the GlobalSurg 3 study reporting on surgical oncology outcomes. Anna consolidated her training as a consultant in the Groote Schuur Hospital Acute Care Surgery Unit for a year.
Upon leaving Groote Schuur Hospital Anna took up the post of consultant general surgeon at New Somerset Hospital. Here she has grown advanced laparoscopic skills in abdominal and hernia surgery, becoming part of international training programs hosted at New Somerset Hospital. Anna was co-leader of the New Somerset Bariatric program, and she introduced electronic endoscopy referrals in order to maintain direct contact with referring clinicians and offer clinical guidance on patient care. Maintaining her academic ties, Anna was involved in re-introducing and expanding the postgraduate teaching and training of surgical registrars on the UCT program. She also provided training and guidance for undergraduate medical students. She often participates in local and national surgical conferences, as a presenter and attendee.
Anna is married to Max, a very handy Engineer, and they recently welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Josephine, to the family. In her free time, Anna enjoys spending time outdoors; gardening, hiking, diving, riding her horse London, and sharing time – and wine – with her family and friends.
